I am an Auntie.

Welcome, Shayde Farr Little. You have entered the world into a strange family and odder auntie. But that's ok. We'll get along just fine.

John Conyers vs. Bush

Congressman John Conyers has filed a lawsuit against President Bush, in conjunction with 11 other senators. I happen to be on his general mailing list because of something I found interesting over a year ago, and since then little things like this pop up. He's a schmooze in the sense that he's still trying to get money out of people, but.... As the email states:

I wanted to update you on the lawsuit I have filed against George W. Bush and members of his administration, referred to in legal parlance as Conyers v. Bush.

You are likely familiar with a number of steps I have taken to challenge the legality and constitutional grounds of the Administration's actions. From the lead up to Iraq, to the Downing Street Minutes, to the outing of a CIA agent, to warrantless wiretapping of U.S. citizens, I have called loudly for the Bush White House to explain itself.
Donate Now and Help Me Fight Back and Work Toward a New Democratic Majority

I decided to file suit against the President in Federal Court in Michigan, along with 11 Senior Democratic Members of Congress. This suit was necessary because of a clear violation of the constitution. When the President signed the Deficit Reduction Act (which "reduced" the deficit by cutting taxes, health care benefits, and student loans), he signed into law a bill that had not passed the House and Senate. A different version of the bill passed each house of Congress with a multi-billion dollar difference in funding for life-saving medical equipment.

Anyone who ever watched Schoolhouse Rock knows this to be a problem.

Given the stakes involved I felt it was imperative to aggressively take this fight to the courts. The President's lawyers tried to get the bill dismissed, but late last week I responded with legal filings that stand up for the rule of law and the Constitution and hope to bring the President, and our United States government, back under the rule of law.

I wanted to email you this news today to update you on our efforts and to thank you for your help and support. Thank you also for your continued dedication to a better democracy.

Sincerely,
John Conyers, Jr.

Highlights of My Trip

There were many pleasant experiences during my trip to California, some expected, some anticipated, some desired, and some completely out of the blue. In random order:

1. I received a phone call from my ex-Boss from the university here. I had heard from a friend who worked in the same area as he that he had retired from the University and began working at a different play of employment, wherein he is happy and healthy. This is, hands down, my favorite boss of all time: incredibly nice, incredibly intelligent, and incredibly laid back. He is also someone who advocated for me to get my hands into things when I was bored stuff and left drooling come the afternoon. He expressed that he had come across my web page (to which I promptly apologized for the occassionally abject use of curse words) and understood that I wasn't quite happy in my current position. After chatting a bit, he promised to send potential job prospects at his current place of employment my way.

This makes me happy in two ways: I got to talk to someone I really, genuinely like and trust, and I have potential job prospects in the future.

2. We walked on the pier in Santa Barbara. Right on the ocean and extending out into it, there are several shops and restaurants and what nots which were really fun to peek into. I was able to see a seal playing around in the water, we had pretty good food, the sun was shining, and more importantly, I was on the ocean. Amazing how much salt water can make me squee in glee.

3. Holy Mother Of Cows, but that Cajun restaurant we went to my last night there was phenomenal. More phenomenal than the Southern restaurant we went to for brunch, which is really saying something. I just... Yeah. Awesome. Awesomeawesomeawesome. Thanks go to Eli for sportin' the cash and puttin' up with us loozers. =)

4. Seeing all of my friends in various atmospheres. It was nice to see you again. =) Even if you crazy freaks don't believe in Air Conditioning. Capital letters there, note. =)

5. Getting to go to the Merc again. I love that place.

6. Going to a bar that reminded me of the bars at home. You know, the ones where your parents could be found, schmoozing and getting drunk in a partially run-down, old carpetted building, trying to remember old times or respark their romances, while cool-as-fuck oddities appear out of nowhere to pour you a drink or sing you a song while they strum the guitar. Yeah, it was kinda like that.

7. Being able to walk for a few hours without getting heat stroke. God Bless California.

And more, but now back to work.
